It is set against the backdrop of the Bangladesh Liberation War. Directed by Ali Ashraf Hossain, it stars Anupam Kher and Bengali actor Irrfan Khan. The film was released in Bangladesh on 18 February 2014, to coincide with Bangladeshi Independence Day, and worldwide on 20 February 2014. This movie was a huge success in India as well as in Bangladesh. The film was later remade into Telugu as "Temper" with Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu starrers. Information about the Release (Promotion, Screening, etc.): The Bengali version of Gunday released with 125 prints on 18 February 2014. Seeing the huge response of the audience on its release day, distribution company decided to increase its number of prints to 135 on 19 February 2014 and further to 145 on 20 February 2014. The total number of prints (135+145) releasing on Friday and Sunday is 270 and it is equivalent to double the number of prints releasing usually in a week (145+145=290). This is a record in Bangladeshi film industry. The distribution company decided to release the film with 270 prints on the same day, despite all the protests of Bangla Cinema Writers Association (BCWA) and Bengali Film Producers Association (BFA). As per routine, on 14 February 2014, Geetanjali Media Limited distributed some advance tickets to some media persons. The distribution was given with an income tag of Tk. 1000/- each only. When the distributors went to sell these tickets at ticket counters, they found that many people had already snatched up most of them. The distributors checked the ticket stubs and found that many people had snatched the tickets to sell them again with an exorbitant price. This practice is called scalping. After hearing this news, BCWA president Ashok Dhanuka decided to go to the media persons who got these advance tickets and strongly refused to take them back. He also declared that all the media persons who will take these tickets, will not be allowed to enter any press clubs of Bangladesh for any screening or press conferences of any upcoming films. BCWA set a deadline for all the media persons, which was 14 February 2014 evening at 5:00 pm. The deadline passed, but no one returned those tickets. Dhanuka said that all the media persons who are trying to come to Bangladesh now, will not be allowed to enter the country. After BCWA protested against Geetanjali Media Limited for selling advance tickets for its films, the press club came under pressure from the government. Many films were boycotted by the press clubs of many cities. After protesting against this incident, some other press clubs also refused to screen Gunday in their halls. So, there were only limited halls where it could be screened. As per reports, there were only seven halls which showed it on February 20, 2014 (the first day of release). Which proves how much this film was disliked by people of Bengal at large.
